First day new job

I had a good day. There was a lot of administrive work which is still pending, setting up laptop, desk phone,e-mail accounts, and learning about the databases, but that’s all once off. The afternoon was mostly spent fighting with my some todo list of operational DBA’s.

My cube has a view, and the transit is not so great. But I’m happy.

Anyways, back to the new job. So far, so good. Aside from getting lost in the parking garage, things have gone well as I was able to re-establish(SMS) my contacts with my buddies. The new team has been quite busy, so aside from a couple of hours of orientation on Friday, I’ve been left alone to explore the health check scenarios on 100 databases which I will be working on.
This is what I understood of the environment..we have like 100 production db’s on Oracle 8i,9i and 10g which will be supported by me and 4 other full time dba’s.Different flavors of O/S Hp Unix,Solaris,Linux and Windows.HP Openview is being used for reporting the alerts along with some home grown scripts. Most of the databases have been migrated unto Grid control which is amazing.
Had a chance to meet IBM sales director for west region and she took us out for lunch to cheese cake factory. Her mission is to convert Oracle people into Informix and she seems to be pretty good at that as she is expecting few licenses here.

Later in the evening I stopped by apple store to have a look at iphone –its 100% amazing lived up to its hype. think I will wait awhile, Why couldn’t they just sell it unlocked ?

At&t only was a dealbreaker for me.
